Proto Modernism

Proto Modernism

Protomodernism contains the main points from Modernism, this style rejects the form of historical styles. These decorations didn't mask the meaning but enhanced it. This time period was filled with "Avant-garde" these were people, artists, that were known to push the design limit. Creating experimental or out of the box concepts and designs. Experimenting with forms and ideas for their clients before these ideas were accepted.

The design revolution was also known as the Vienna Secession.
The Vienna succession was a worldwide event that helped advance art history, philosophy, and psychology. This created an interesting culture in design and helped unify the arts. A pronounce influence of the Vienna succession was about house designers. Some main designers of this time we’re Otto Wagner and Adolf Loose, these were designers who withdrew from academics, protesting against historic design, but not embracing Art Nouveau.

Throughout each of these designers, there were many different interesting chair designs, one that I liked in particular was Moder's armchair. As well as Joseph Hoffmans Palatas chair with an angular back as well as his club chair from 1910. I feel like each of these applications work well to apply to common modern design and the current design world. The chair design seems to never quite go out of style, each have aspects that work in many different designs.

Garrett Reitveld was also a large piece of the Proto modernism movement. He was a very influential, Dutch designer of the 20th century, and was a designer an architect who began as a cabinet maker in his father's shop. His techniques were based around simplicity and construction, he embraced matt mass production of furniture and inexpensive production methods. Lots of his design would’ve used materials like plywood. sheet metal and beat Beech wood. One of his most popular pieces of work is the Schroeder house. It’s a design featuring a flexible floor plan and cohesiveness between inside and outside with the use of primary colors.

ONE STEP FURTHER

Frank Loyd Wright was also a large part of the style. He was an early contributor to American modernism and developed the American architecture and vocabulary. In his work, he mainly focused on residential his homes. Lots of his designs were taken from nature and repeated throughout the interior. Lots of glass was used as a design element that the net the natural world come into the home that. he had a very organic style to him as well as focusing on livable homes focused on the family.

One of my favorite Frank Lloyd Wright homes is his home in Oregon, the Gordon House. It is the only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Oregon and was based around affordable materials and living conditions.
