Modernism in America
Modernism in America
Modernism started in Germany and France and then quickly spread all over the world. Throughout this time period travel journals, books, and exhibitions were what spread Modernism. Once modernism spread Frank Lloyd Wright. One house looked at was the Hollyhock House, throughout this home there were many monumental structured of poured concrete with cast geometric ornaments. It also had elaborate terraces and gardens. Another home by Frank Lloyd Wright was the Millard House in Pasadena, CA. This home was very successful during this time, it has textile blocks.
Rudolph Schindler was born in Austria; he had a collaborative relationship with Wright, but it ended with a conflict. Lots of the time he practiced in California where he designed a beach house for the Lovell family. Methods and materials he used were concrete, redwood, and glass. His style was space architecture this concept was determined to let the architecture provide the structure, space, and design for interior spaces. Richard Neutra studied in Vienna with Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner, he came into the US in 1921 and worked with Louis Sullivan and Wright. One of his main values was to focus on the unique needs of each client. As well as mainly focusing on the Art, Architecture, and landscape of each house. Lots of his work consisted of geometric and airy styles he worked on many residential homes and was the West Coast version of Mid-Century Modern.
This week we talked through many different architects and designer throughout this time. I found it interesting to compare and contrast the different methods to design. Throughout the modernism time period it was common to see lots of simplistic designs that stripped the design down to the core. As well as using raw materials such as concrete, glass, and stone to communicate their ideas. I found Frank Lloyd Wright's work much more detailed and decorated as a whole. Compared to an Architect such as Miles van der Rohe and the Farnsworth House, which consists of mostly glass and not much ordainment.

ReplyDeleteI appreciated your summary of American Modernism. I appreciated your paragraph that examined the different styles of this era from the more simplistic to ornamented. You also covered the raw materials of the different designers. Good current application images. I missed seeing the "One Step Further" section. 45/50 points
