 Post Modernism 

    Throughout this time period there were many historical elements that played a role in the development of design. Economics started to improve, and the customer culture was more self-oriented. The post modernism movement was the designated movement of the times. The Memphis Movement was an eclectic group of designers dedicated to abolishing Modernism and the strict design mandates. This groups exhibition would challenge the ideas and concepts of Modernism. It was inspired by Art Deco and Pop Art. Andy Warhol was an American Visual Artist. He mainly worked with pop art, abstract expressionism, modern art, contemporary art, and naive art. When looking at the designs of the Memphis Movement they push the form and function to another level. 

    Robert Venturi was an architect that studied at Princeton University, he wrote two influential books that inspired post-modernism. Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture goes over the values of simplistic and logical design with Modernism. This embraced the Historical element and ornamentation. Some of his most famous work is the Vanna Venturi House and the Chippendale Chair. I found the chair to be very interesting in its pop art shape as well as the design that is printed onto the chair. 

    The New York Five was a group of post-modernism contemporary New York City Architects. One being Michael Graves, he studied architecture at Harvard University. His Post-Modern architecture embraced a more decorative detail as well as having strong colors and forms. Some of his characteristics consisted of humanism as the basic tenant of the design. I think this is very important as well as his ideas of giving meaning to the space itself. He mainly used colors that were represented in nature as well as paving the way for accessibility for handicap. 

    For Interiors I found the wiggle chair to be very interesting and intriguing for a space. Thinking of ways that you could enhance this design and give it things to surround it that create a more human looking scene. As well at the current applications that create pop art looking spaces that transform the space into a new idea. 

ONE STEP FURTHER  

    Throughout this time, I found Richard Meier's work to be very interesting, and I especially liked his Douglas House- Harbor House. The different planes and sizes that create space and an order to the facades of the home. He was inspired by Le Corbusier and Mies Vander Rohe which I also found interesting, and I feel that you can see this connection throughout his work.
